Especialistas en filosofía de la mente y filosofía de la percepción visitan la UAM-Cuajimalpa para impartir conferencias y seminarios sobre su más reciente investigación. Durante 2011 y 2013 contamos con la visita del Profesor Adrian Cussins (Universidad Nacional de Colombia), la Profesora Susanna Siegel (Harvard University), el Dr. Miguel Angel Sebastián (UNAM), el Profesor Iakovos Vasiliou (The Graduate Center, CUNY) y el Dr. Juan González (UAEM).

CONFERENCIA – Jorge Morales
El Mtro. Jorge Morales (Columbia University) impartió la ponencia ‘Variedades de la introspección’. La ponencia se llevó a cabo el 19 de Agosto de 2013.
Resumen: Introspection has commonly been taken to yield peculiar and privileged access to one’s own mental states. Among other things, these two epistemic virtues of introspection have been taken to give support to what I call the uniformity assumption. According to it, there must be one, and only one, mechanism that explains our introspective abilities. I argue that the uniformity assumption is not warranted. Firstly, even though it is plausible prima facie, if there is evidence against it we should abandon it. Secondly, uniformity is plausible mainly because peculiarity and privileged access in particular are assumed to be features of introspective knowledge. I argue that given that our introspective skills are not as privileged as it is commonly assumed, there are no strong motivations for defending uniformity. Finally, I discuss some benefits of opting for a pluralist approach to introspection.

La Prof. Adriana Renero (The Graduate Center, CUNY) impartió la ponencia ‘Antireductionism and the Nature of Introspection’ el 23 de Septiembre de 2013.
Resumen: Some philosophers argue that introspection is structurally similar to perception and other mechanisms, or that there is an overlapping of introspection with other mental processes.

LECTURE – Iakovos Vasiliou
Professor Iakovos Vasiliou (The Graduate Center, CUNY) gave a lecture on ‘Aristotle on the Analogy Between Perception and Thought’. SEE VIDEO here
Abstract: In the De Anima Aristotle draws striking analogies between thought and perception. Both thought and perception take place via a transition of some sort from potentiality to actuality. In addition, both thought and perception involve taking on the form of the object without its matter and also, at some stage, becoming one with the object. This paper seeks to understand what precisely Aristotle sees as similar and dissimilar in the activities of thinking and perceiving, particularly with a view to arguing for the distinctive and unappreciated nature of theoretical nous as described in DA III.4.

LECTURE – Juan Gonzalez
Dr. Juan Gonzalez (UAEM) gave the talk ‘Theory of Perception and Enactive Functionalism’. The talk was held on November 11, 2013 at UAM-Cuajimalpa.

Hence, no unique way of knowing about our minds, nor any sharp contrast between the way in which we know our minds and other ways of knowing about the world. Instead, a range of different mental processes and mechanisms, or states such as perception and attention, are believed to be involved in introspection. Insofar as introspection is reduced to perception or to other mechanisms and processes, this view is identified as reductionism. I argue for a different theory and discuss how introspection is both different to perception, and also a distinctive way of knowing our mental states.

Resumen de la charla: Por lo menos desde Aristóteles se ha entendido generalmente la percepción sensorial en términos de contenido. En filosofía se habla hoy día de diversos tipos de contenido (representacional, informacional, proposicional, fenoménico, conceptual, experiencial, etc.) para tratar de entender nuestra relación cognitiva con el mundo. En esta charla argumentaré que, para entender apropiadamente la naturaleza de la percepción, es más productivo indagar primeramente sobre las funciones que ésta ha cumplido (y sigue cumpliendo) a lo largo de nuestro desarrollo filogenético y ontogenético, dejando para después los análisis en términos de contenido. Esto nos lleva a cambiar la pregunta tradicional de ¿cuáles son los insumos elementales de la percepción en general y de la experiencia perceptiva en particular? por esta otra: ¿qué funciones cumple la percepción en situación y cómo determinan éstas la experiencia perceptiva? Al mismo tiempo, para evitar las críticas que se le han hecho al funcionalismo clásico (à la Putnam), argumentaré que el aspecto encarnado y situado de la percepción es fundamental en el análisis de la percepción, surgiendo así un acercamiento que podemos llamar funcionalista enactivo que permite conjugar función, experiencia y conceptualización para entender no solo los contenidos cognitivos desde la dinámica perceptiva que los posibilita, sino la naturaleza misma de la percepción. Finalmente, sugeriré que la experiencia perceptiva debe ser entendida no como un vehículo representacional entre mente y mundo, sino como una matriz fenoménica e informacional que posibilita y da sentido a nuestro contacto cognitivo con el mundo. En nuestro análisis nos concentraremos en la modalidad visual.
